Sikkim is ribbon-like roads winding around graceful mountains, deep valleys with thin rivers that will fill to torrents during monsoon and clouds of thick mist obscuring mountain tops and views. It’s a lovely place, very gentle. Pelling is a small town in west Sikkim known for historic ruins, important monasteries, authentic villages and of course Kanchendzonga, the world’s third highest mountain.
Darjeeling is a special place because of a serendipitous meeting of location and history. Situated way up in the Himalayan foothills, it is presided over by the mighty massif Kanchendzonga. My time there was magical partially because of Darjeeling itself, partially because of my guide, and partially because I was staying at the Windamere Inn.
