Mariellen Ward at Tiger Fort, Jaipur, India during her first six-month solo trip in 2006

WeGoSolo helps women travel alone safely, wisely and well — and now we have a sponsor!

Travelling solo for many, many months in India over the past seven years has been the most transformative experience of my life. I gained a level of self-confidence I never thought I would achieve. I opened myself up to another culture and allowed it to become part of me. I gained new-found perspective about myself as a global citizen. And I gained much, much more, including many new friends, an Indian family, a lifetime of adventures, and a new career as a travel writer. I believe in solo travel for women — and also in playing it safe (see my Top Safety Tips for Women Travelling in India.)

Join the weekly #WeGoSolo chat on Twitter on Wednesday at 11 am EST

When I founded WeGoSolo in February 2013, I did it with two aims in mind. One, I wanted to defend and encourage female solo travellers — you can read that initial post, Ode to the Lady Traveller: Why we need the WeGoSolo Movement here; and two, I wanted to create a community so women could share travel tips, strategies and resources to help keep each other safe. The tag line I use for WeGoSolo is: helping women travel alone safely, wisely and well.

So I am truly thrilled to announce that WeGoSolo has a sponsor, Hostelbookers; and that we are launching a contest, which you can enter on this blog and also on Ottsworld, The Shooting Star and A Dangerous Business. Sherry, Shivya, Amanda and I will each be offering a prize to one reader (four prizes in all) and all you have to do is help us find out more about female solo travellers and tell us your dream solo destination. The prize is a Hostelbookers gift voucher worth EURO 150 (about $200 CDN currently) — which you can use to book any properties on their site, and which will help you achieve your dream trip sooner.

Your Dream Solo Destination Contest

Winner will be announced during #WeGoSolo Tweetchat on July 10 (Wed 11 am EST).

To be eligible to win the Your Dream Solo Destination Contest, just follow these two simple rules:

1. Fill out this survey about female solo travel before June 26, 2013
2. Leave a comment on this Breathedreamgo blog post stating your dream solo destination before June 26, 2013

My dream destination is Japan. For the last five months I have been volunteering at an NGO in Cambodia, and whilst I love it, Japan is becoming more and more of a distant dream. A few weeks away by myself in Japan would be bliss!

I was born and raised by my vietnamese parents in Germany. Right now, I am in the USA as an AuPair. Besides taking care of my host children, I definitely got to see a lot of places so far.
I traveled by myself for my vacation to Florida and Mexico which was my first time solo. At first I did’nt intent to travel alone but after I have waited for companion’s answers week after week, I decided to just fix the plan and book the flights. I didn’t want to wait any longer or even worse not being able to go at all just because no one else could come!
In the end, I can say that I do not regret it and that I had the best time. Going solo for the first time made me worried of course but after my vacation I felt so self-confident. I feel more open to new people and culture now.
Some months later I traveled to Chicago on my own again just because I felt so good about it the last time.
I still want to see a lot of places, so I have a whole dream destination list. For now, I would be really excited to see Australia, Thailand and India.
( I played Holi in NYC, it would be amazing to experience it in India. I met an Indian girl while traveling in Mexico and she strongly recommened it 🙂 )

Mariellen I’m so excited that you were able to arrange something like this, and get information to people about traveling solo. There are so many misconceptions about solo travel, but the more we educate and inform people about what traveling solo is like (hint: not crazy, or boring or lonely like I’ve heard) hopefully the more people will be willing to give it a try, female or male.

Myself I’d love to travel to Morocco. I think it would be a challenge, but it’s a country that’s held this strange fascination for me ever since I was young.

I’ve always wanted to go Backpacking in Europe. I really wanna explore their rich culture, and experience living with the locals. As an Asian, I would also be one of those rare “Asian Backpackers” and encourage more women in our country to go “SOLO” and experience the difference. Raised in a conservative place, very few DARE to do SOLO travel and experience travel for a longer time. I wanna prove and show an example how WE women can also travel, see the world and experience life safely. Because it is a BIG world out there and life must be continuously explored. Every place, every experience and every people we meet gives us a new perspective about life. Because Traveling rejuvenates the mind and body —- BUT Solo traveling reinvigorates the mind, body and SOUL.

Congrats on the new Sponsor! So glad to see HostelBookers encouraging female solo travel!

Hard to choose between India, Thailand and others but My dream solo destination is Africa. I’ve been wanting to go to Africa for quite sometime, mainly to volunteer and start my own chapter in meaningful travel. Travel has made me appreciate the privileges I have being a girl growing up in the Western World that unfortunately some girls in other communities may not have. It’s the reason I left my 9-5 job a few months – to finally contribute in a much more meaningful way, to help make a difference, and hopefully leave – even if very small – a positive footprint that helps the communities we travel to.

Way at the top of my list! Dying to see Angkor Wat!!

My dream destination overall is Mt Everest… but I dont fancy the idea of a hostel at the peak! Haha 100% serious as well… but obviously for the sake of the competition my dream destination is Norway its so stunning that it hurts and I hate how its just out of my grasp in terms of affordability, i want to go to northern norway, somewhere like Tromso… One day.

It astounds me that in this day and age some girls dont think they can do travel, its the one thing in the world im crazy about, its not something to be dreamt and lusted after though, get out there, do it! Thats the message we need, we need to be empowered so we believe we can do it. A motto ive adapted that covers just about everything in life is “it works if you work it” to me that tells me anything my dizzy head can dream up, I can get there, theres no way I cant- provided I work towards it and commit to it, anything is possible.

Ever since 2008 when I heard Terje Isungset play (non-ice versions of) his ice music at the Kilkenny Arts Festival in Ireland, I’ve wanted to attend the Ice Music festival in Norway. The Ice Music Festival is held for 3 days during the first new moon in January– how amazing it must be to hear such haunting music surrounded by moonlight and snow! I love traveling solo! I’ve traveled solo and with others. Going solo gave me freedom to do as I wanted and allowed for more spontaneity. I didn’t have to do what other people wanted or put up with their personality (nor they mine).

There’s so many places on my list how does one choose? Currently I’m leaning towards Turkey, Morocco and Greece.

My solo dream destination is China. Though my family is Chinese, I know very little about the country as I was raised in Australia. I find traveling alone gives you the freedom to do things you normally wouldn’t if you were with someone. And I find that I tend to meet more people traveling solo than if I’m with friends as I have to fend for myself and it makes me that little bit more confident with each trip!

  69. Nathalie Velasquez June 11, 2013 at 12:30 am #

It is very difficult for me to choose a dream solo destination with there being so many amazing places and cities that I have not had the pleasure in visiting. After living the past 12 months of my life in Germany and learning about a new culture, It has made me want to take a step further and learn or even integrate into many more different cultures. However, if I were to choose one place in the world that I would love to visit Chicago, USA. From a young age, has Chicago been on the top of my list and I hope that one day I will be lucky enough to have the opportunity to go there! 🙂

My DREAM solo destination is El Salvador! I would love to get to do some great surfing, practice my spanish with the locals and do some volunteer work at school in a rural community.. I learned a lot about myself during my time in Central America. It was definitely the most rewarding solo traveling I have ever done. I made friends with a few avid Guatemalan surfers and a Salvadoran tattoo artist while living in Antigua, Guatemala and they all had the most incredible things to say about El Salvador. Until my time comes, I’ll just keep dreaming…

My dream solo destination is definitely, hands down, India. I’ve always had a fascination with the country, but I’m holding onto the hope of visiting for at least 3 months so that I can explore and experience as much as possible.

And not just because I have a terrible obsession with Bollywood, and dream of being an extra in a movie starting Hrithik Roshan. Though that would be a definite perk.

My solo dream destination is China. I have been to the touristy spots of China and I recently discovered that they have vast areas of ecological interest. I love nature and I’m very much interested about the idea of doing ecotour/s which I believe is best experienced in China. I dream of traveling to Zhangjiajie Hunan, Jiuzhaigou Sichuan, Yangtze River, Guilin and Lhasa Tibet.

Hi. I enjoy travelling solo because it affords you so much freedom. I went travelling from Dec 2007 to September 2008. All by myself. People say I was brave but it didn’t feel like that to me. I just did it. That’s what I’ll always say to other females who are thinking about travelling solo. Just do it!!

I am really struggling with the concept of dream SOLO destination. The destinations I choose to go to are generally not decided by the fact I am going solo. I want to travel to experience culture, new places, new food, etc. Of course I will not be going to places like the Maldives alone, but more than anything I am governed by my budget!

My dream solo destination at the moment is South Africa!

I would like to go back to South America to visit the countries I didn’t have time to visit on my first trip, like Ecuador and Colombia.
I was travelling around that contintent for 16 months on my own, and I absolutely loved it. It was my first trip alone, and before I started it, I was a bit scared that I wouldn’t like the experience, I met so many people, and everyone treated me so right, that I fell like home everywhere I went.
That’s why I stayed for a bit longer in every place I visited, and, unfortunately I run out of money before I could visit the last countries in my plan (Ecuador and Colombia).

Holds a vast mix of cultures and traditions … Fabulous architecture, Roman ruins, medieval city, the “capital of the Catalan Modernism” …
For me it just seems to have a mystical ambience!
It has many places to meet and visit! Several museums, squares, want to go to the Picasso Museum and the Natural Sciences 🙂

My dream destination would be Australia/New Zealand. I had my first solo traveling experience last summer when I was going to do study abroad for a month and decided to travel around Europe for three instead of just being with my classmates. I’m a law student and I was struggling a lot after my first year and it was really that solo experience that reaffirmed my faith in humanity and drove me to push forward in my education and life choices. I had a life-changing experience last summer and I was, of course, bitten by the travel bug. I think it’s frightening for women to travel solo, but only at first, because when you’re there and untethered, it’s amazingly liberating.

My dream solo destination is Indonesia, for the scuba diving.
My first big solo trip, 9 months in SE Asia, was solo because my travel partner bailed on me at the last minute. It turned out to be a blessing, as I realized I loved traveling alone. On that trip, I went snorkeling in Indonesia and was blown away by the beauty of the reefs. I can’t wait to go back, to go scuba diving. Being a solo female diver is great – it’s always easy to meet new dive buddies on the boats!

I’ve been traveling solo since my first trip in 1975 at age 22. Work dictated I take a winter vacation and not many people want to go to the UK in January/February! So off I went. Found out later my parents were worried sick. Staying with family and friends at times but mostly on my own in the UK and Amsterdam and Dublin…It was the making of me and I haven’t looked back… it’s been 38 fabulous years of travel since then – some solo – some with friends but mostly on my own. I was very shy and it has built my confidence up no end as well as giving me such an open hearted view of life and other cultures. Experience has taught me to trust my instincts…they are usually never wrong.
