Mariellen in her Tilley hat at Bada Bagh, Jaisalmer, India

Me, Tilley and the deserts of Rajasthan

I have fair skin and I spend a good part of every year under the Indian sun. How do I do it? My Tilley hat! If you don’t know, Tilley hats are legendary in Canada, where the company is headquartered — and in many other places too, I am sure. Tilley Endurables makes lots of other great products for the active traveler, but it was the Tilley hat that first made the company’s name. It was specifically how the hat was tested  — which involved an elephant’s digestive system. I’m not sure whether anyone intended to actually feed the hat to the elephant, but the hat was eaten, later extracted, thoroughly cleaned and found to be still in near-perfect condition.

I’ve been wearing my Tilley (pictured above) for the past few trips to India, so when I was looking for sponsors and prizes for Breathedreamgo, I naturally thought of the company — which is located in my home town, Toronto, Canada. And sure enough, they generously gave me a brand new hat to wear on my upcoming trip — the R8 Women’s Broad Brim Raffia Hat pictured below — AND a hat to give away in a contest.

Contest details below.

Really? An elephant ate the hat? That is so unexpected, but I hope you had a spare for the rest of that trip. What kind of reviews do you give your new R8 hat Mariellen? I’m looking for a broad brim for the summer.

Thanks for the comments. Tilley Hats really do rock. @Deborah, sometimes you just have to embrace the tourist within! @Marlene, I am on my way to a tiger reserve and I will see how I like the new raffia hat. I loved my old one (the one in the picture).

You look sporty and comfortable in your Tilley. Nice picture. I don’t know whose hat was “tested” by the elephant, but if it was my hat, It would not have gone back on my head no matter how many times it was washed!

I’ve been a Tilley hat owner for years. Have had five hats. Currently have three. Have received many compliments on them. Would love to add the R7 to my collection.

    Cheers,
    Allan

I am not a fan of hats but I have heard the Tilley is wonderful and lasts forever. I like the fact it is big – I tend to lose baseball caps (which I loathe but I am a walker and on hot days you need something on your head!)but I think I would know if this one got left behind!

  • Chrissy Lynes said:

I deserve a Tilly hat because they originate from Australia (my mother land)> I’ve always worn them, even as a child living under the extreme southern pacific sunshine :) I love your Tilly, Meriellen!
